Better lighting on a budget
Layer lamps, warm the bulbs, and replace the worst fixture.
Lighting changes how a room feels more than almost anything else. Most rooms need more light sources, not brighter ones.
Easy wins
- Add two or three lamps at different heights
- Use warm white LED bulbs (around 2700K) in living spaces
- Put lamps on smart plugs or timers
- Plug-in wall sconces avoid wiring
Replacing a fixture
Swapping a ceiling fixture like-for-like is a common DIY job, but only with the breaker off and the wires tested dead with a voltage tester. If wiring looks old, scorched or confusing, or you need a new circuit, hire a licensed electrician.
