Buy secondhand furniture like a pro
Solid wood, good bones, and a careful inspection.
Secondhand furniture is often better made and far cheaper than new. A careful look before you buy avoids the duds.
Where to look
- Local online marketplaces and Buy Nothing groups
- Thrift and consignment stores
- Estate and yard sales
- Habitat for Humanity ReStores
Check before you buy
- Wobble test: push gently on corners
- Drawers that slide and joints that are glued or dovetailed, not just stapled
- Smell: smoke and mildew are hard to remove
- Upholstered items and mattresses: inspect seams carefully for signs of bed bugs
- For cribs and children's items, check current safety standards and recalls
Safety when meeting sellers
Meet in daylight, bring someone with you for pickups, and avoid sending payment before you've seen the item.
General educational information. Prices vary by region and store; renters should check their lease. Nickel Home Pros isn't paid by any store or brand.
