Renter-friendly makeovers that protect your deposit

Ask first, choose removable, and keep everything you replace.

5 min read

Renters can make a home feel like theirs too. The key is changes that come out cleanly, and asking before anything permanent.

Usually safe

  • Rugs, curtains, lamps and plants
  • Removable hooks and strips (test on a hidden spot first)
  • Furniture, art leaning on shelves, and mirrors
  • Swapping cabinet knobs, if you keep the originals to put back

Ask your landlord first

  • Painting, and whether you must repaint before leaving
  • Peel-and-stick wallpaper, which can pull paint off some walls
  • Changing light fixtures or anything hardwired
  • Mounting a TV or heavy shelves

Protect your deposit

Get permission in writing, take dated photos before and after, and store original hardware and fixtures in a labeled bag.
