Guides / Paint and walls
Paint a room for less
Buy the right amount, the right sheen, and spend on prep.
Paint is the cheapest big change in any room. A few choices decide whether it looks professional and how much you spend.
How much to buy
- A gallon typically covers around 350 to 400 square feet per coat; check the can
- Most rooms need two coats
- Use our materials calculator for your room
Sheen
- Flat or matte for ceilings and low-traffic walls
- Eggshell or satin for living areas and bedrooms
- Semi-gloss for trim, doors and bathrooms
Save money
- Buy one quality paint rather than two coats of a cheap one that needs three
- Check the store's "oops" shelf for mistinted paint at a discount, if a neutral color works
- Reuse rollers by wrapping them in plastic between coats
Safety
In homes built before 1978, test for lead before sanding or scraping old paint.
